1 Peter 2 (NIV)
2 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
The Living Stone and a Chosen People
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by Godand precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[b]
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”[c]
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[d]
THE CORNERSTONE THE BUILDERS REJECTED…WHY WOULD THE BUILDERS “REJECT” A CORNERSTONE: a stone that forms the base of a corner of a building, joining two walls.
The “builders” are trying to erect an edifice on what they believe to be a solid and sound doctrine AND JESUS DIDN’T MAKE SENSE TO THEIR DOCTRINE!
JESUS AS THE CORNERSTONE GOES BACK TO HIS CONVERSATION WITH WHOM? PETER…
Matthew 16:13-20New International Version (NIV)
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[a] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[b] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[d]loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
THE CORNERSTONE IS “YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD” AND “I FOUND THIS OUT IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH THROUGH GOD!” — I need to be anchored in my action before i can take action; I need to trust in my truth before I speak it or seek it; I must be sure and have my mind made up, not by human measure or educational decree but rather by the exaltation of my Spirit, imparting to me by TRUSTING MY GUT AND HEARING FROM GOD!
Sometimes our lives don’t come together because we are so focused on becoming the builder, the authority, the well-liked and highly regarded voice of reason and rising that we forget to stand up and stand on the parts of our stories that don’t make sense but that were brought together to BE US TO BLESS OTHERS!
